The Neato XV-11 is an all-floor robotic vacuum designed by Neato Robotics. Using powerful laser technology, it maps out the entire room and forges a logical and efficient cleaning path while avoiding walls and furniture.
A programmable interface enables you to schedule your XV-11 to clean daily at specific times.
You can have it work while you’re away and come back to tidier floors on a daily basis. No need to worry about the battery either, it senses when the battery is low and returns to its charging hub. Once ready, it resumes work where it left off.
How I Purchased My First Robot Vacuum
I’ve been a bit skeptical about cleaning robotics for quite some time now. At one time, I considered them to be expensive gimmicks and quite frankly, the idea of some autonomous drone going around my house cleaning things is like something out of science fiction. While not necessarily a bad thing, I wasn’t going to throw down hundreds of dollars so I could feel like I lived in the Jetson’s universe.
All that changed a couple of months back when my friend introduced me to his Roomba, and the little thing piqued my interest.
I was excited, but not totally convinced.
I decided to do my own research before jumping into something I knew nothing about.
This when I came across Neato Robotics and their XV-11, which seems to have taken the technology and ironed out some key flaws in competing brands.
The most important innovation being the navigation system.
While Roomba relies on bumping into things to recognize a block, Neato’s XV-11 maps out the entire room using lasers and stores it into its internal memory, which it then uses to create a logical and efficient cleaning path.
I was impressed by the idea and potential of it, so I bought one.
How it Compared to My Regular Vacuum Cleaner
It was fairly easy to get set up. I charged my XV-11 and then had it go on its first cleaning mission. It’s an impressive and fun little machine to watch as it worked to figure out its environment.
Not as noisy as a regular vacuum, but its power is somewhat comparable, and I consider that to be quite impressive. The dust bin will fill up quick, though, it’s not a bad size considering the overall size of the unit, but you aren’t going to cleaning the entire house with one of these.
The Neato XV-11’s self-return function is great. As stated, it’ll actually charge itself and resume work once fully charged, removing the need for you to be constantly monitoring it.
If you have some really tight spots in your home, you may come across occasions where it will get stuck.
I believe this is due to how the mapping works. It’s so determined to avoid contact with obstacles that it can often just become stationary.
If you find it stuck like this, you can simply face it in the direction of a clear path and it will go about its day as if nothing happened.
Also it might be worth noting that the XV-11 will go anywhere it can physically go, which is why it comes with boundary markers. Or, you could simply just close doors, I guess.
If you own any pets, especially young ones, you might need to isolate them while this little robot does its work.
I ran this guy in front of my 8 month collie cross and she thought we’d brought her home an expensive mobile toy she could hunt and bark at all day.
- It’s a cleaning robot! Completely automatic and cleans even when you’re not there.
- Thoughtful technology and clever navigation.
- Powerful for such a small vacuum.
- Can charge itself when battery is low.
- Programmable, cleans when you want it to.
- Battery life isn’t that great.
- Limited dust bin space.
- May bring out the feral animal in your small puppy.
- May bug out in tight areas.
Overall, the Neato XV-11 robotic vacuum is an innovative little piece of technology that is kind of fun to show to your friends, and functional enough so that it doesn’t just look like a ‘fad’ gadget.
While it won’t replace your regular home vacuum on account of power and storage capacity, it’s still a viable option for run-of-the-mill floor cleaning work.
If you’ve been looking for a way to reduce the amount of free dirt around your house without having to do any extra work, then this vacuum is a real life-saver! As always, do your due diligence and check out some customer reviews first before buying.
