Installing deep pile carpets was my husband’s idea so I told him from the get-go that it was his responsibility to keep it clean.
I run a tight ship at home, mainly because my asthmatic son is allergic to dust and dirt, and we all know that carpets are a magnet for these allergens.
For years now, this is how he’s kept the carpets immaculate:
On The Spot Cleaning
Most important rule to remember – catch them as soon as they happen. This means that if you spill something on the carpet, clean it at once. Don’t wait for someone else to clean it up; do the following immediately:
- Get a clean towel and blot it dry. Contain the spill by pressing down the towel to absorb the moisture without contaminating surrounding areas.
- Always have a spot-cleaning solution of liquid soap and water on hand and spray it over the spot.
- Wash off the solution with water and then let the area dry. For colored spills, use some vinegar. Rub gently to avoid damaging the carpet.
The rule is also applicable to dry spills (powdered milk). If the spill is too large, use a portable vacuum cleaner. If you do this, you will spend less time cleaning during your regular schedule.
Maintain a Cleaning Schedule
If you follow the first rule, you might be tempted to forgo your regular schedule. Don’t be deceived by the exterior. Get a good vacuum cleaner, one that is designed for deep pile carpets. My husband maintains a weekly schedule where he vacuums the carpeted areas. He makes several passes on the carpet to make sure that dirt and grits are dislodged.
There’s a reason why grits are called grits – it’s because they are really gritty, and they can really hold on to the carpet.
Once a year, my husband rents an extraction machine from a cleaning company to steam clean the carpets. This can be laborious, so I ask my brothers to help him at this time. In exchange, he helps them also when its time to clean their place.
If you have the money, its better to hire professionals to clean your carpet. In the early days of our marriage, my husband vetoed this. Nowadays, he is the first one to call the carpet cleaners.
You can choose between the dry or wet method. The dry method is preferable if you don’t want to wait too long for the carpet to dry.
Although it says dry, it really means that they just use less water, but there is still some moisture needed to clean the carpets. But if there is extensive cleaning to be done (like after a wild party), then the latter is highly recommended.
I was not a big fan of carpets in the beginning. However, if you maintain it well, it adds a lot of class to your home décor. Not only does it look amazing, it can keep you warm during the cold winter nights.
